Frequently asked questions

How can you ship a shield and chinstrap so fast?

Our Minuteman Line is built for speed without cutting corners on quality. We use the same American-made materials and the same construction process as our custom work. By simplifying the designs, we can ship your shield and chinstrap in 2 business days instead of the usual 8-week custom build time. Same craftsmanship, same materials, just less waiting.

If you're looking for something more personalized, head on over to the standard shields and we'll be happy to make you something awesome! Want a chinstrap design that's not on the customizer? Drop us an email or a DM on our socials and we'll do our best to make what you're looking for. Keep in mind that some custom work may come with an additional charge.

Will the shield and chinstrap fit my helmet?

Yes! Both are made to fit all helmets.

Our shields are 6.25 inches tall. To accommodate lids like the TL-2 that traditionally call for a slightly taller shield, we do not punch holes for helmet studs. Our shields are thick enough to keep up with your lid and maintain its shape while being thin enough to allow stud nuts to tighten down sufficiently.

Our chinstrap design is not like many you'll come across. We use Chicago screws that are fully removable from the chinstrap, so all you have to feed through the loops on your helmet is the leather itself, as opposed to typically having big snaps get in the way.

How do I install the shield and chinstrap on my helmet?

Shield: We don't drill holes for the helmet studs, because stud locations vary between helmet models and even individual leather helmets. To drill your own holes, place the shield snugly in the shield holder (eagle) and push back on the studs to leave an impression on the back of the shield. Use a leather punch or drill to make the holes where the impressions were made.

Chinstrap: Unscrew and remove the Chicago screws and feed the leather through the loop on your helmet. Reattach and tighten the Chicago screws to secure. The Chicago screws take a Torx (star) or flathead screwdriver. Because of this design, our straps can fit any helmet and are stronger than the typical snaps you find on many chinstraps.

Does the chinstrap come with a buckle or stitching?

No to both. We produce "West coast style" chinstraps, meaning there is no plastic buckle. We made this decision after lots of interviews, finding that most firefighters just cinch their chinstrap down as opposed to trying to find the buckle when masking up. Therefore, it made sense to get rid of a potential source of failure, especially since many don't use it at all.

We've also stopped offering stitched chinstraps because we weren't happy with the end product and because we've found stitching can get jammed up or worn out in the cinch.

What is patent leather, and is the Boston shield tied together?

Patent leather is a highly varnished leather that has a mirror shine and a perfect color. It is typically the same material used for mirror shine dress shoes on class A uniforms.

And of course we tie it! Would it really be a Boston if it wasn't tied in the back?
